Madiba Restaurant Description:
It's always a party at Madiba, New York's only South African restaurant (its moniker is Nelson Mandela's nickname). Done up like a shantytown shebeen, complete with enameled tin cups, Madiba serves a hearty cuisine that's been shaped by indigenous Africans, Dutch, Malays, Indians, French Huguenots and Brits. You may not have heard of Durban bunny chow before---it's a thick, raisin-flecked curry served in hollowed-out country bread---but you'll be craving it after a visit to Madiba. Other tasty offerings: Cape Town's traditional black mussel soup with saffron and herbs or Cape Malay's traditional bobotie---curried mince baked with an egg custard topping and served with yellow rice, raisins and a selection of sambals. There are also Caribbean offerings and, of course, you can choose some good South African wines from a limited list.
