718 Description:
This busy Queens restaurant (718 is the area code for New York City's outer boroughs) tries to bring an haute sensibility to a neighborhood filled with Czech taverns and Greek tavernas. The menu is mostly Gallic-inspired, but occasionally nods to Italy and Spain. The tarte flambée (or in neighborhood parlance, flatbread pizzas) come with prosciutto, garlic, goat cheese and various crispy veggies. The grilled striped sea bass is also nicely (and simply) prepared, accompanied by homemade gnocchi and artichokes. The roast chicken breast, however, was dry and the braised short rib fell flat. The dessert menu doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it largely succeeds in satisfying, particularly the moist homemade chocolate and banana bread pudding. A handful of wines by the glass are reasonably priced.
