On the well-trafficked stretch of Franklin Street is Brooklyn Label, looking to become the breakfast spot of choice for hungry hipsters. And it just might succeed: the eatery cooks a far better meal than any other spot nearby. Inside, the owners have spruced things up just enough, slapping a fresh coat of yellow paint on the walls and leaving the pipes and ductwork partially exposed. Big picture windows let in plenty of light, and the patrons who sit at the large bar get a good view of the open kitchen and the oversize chalkboard that serves as the menu. The chefs stick to American classics, with the occasional Southern or Southwestern flourish. Biscuits with mushroom gravy are rich and dense, as opposed to the sweet challah french toast. A selection of fresh pastries from Balthazar is also an option for those who don't want to commit to a heavy meal. Lunch goes the sandwich and salad route, with diner favorites like steak frites side by side with good old mac featuring a melting mélange of Gruyère, cheddar, Parmesan and béchamel which you can nosh on with a hot dog or veggie dog.
