Abistro Description:
Located down a quiet block in Fort Greene, this African-accented bistro serves up surprisingly complex dishes. The eatery is the brainchild of Abdul Gueye, who has logged time in the kitchens at Aureole. But while Gueye brings a kind of cosmopolitan culinary sophistication to the neighborhood, there's also something sophomoric about the offerings. They sound good on the menu, but the execution doesn't always pull it together. The Senegalese fried chicken, for example, overwhelms the taste buds with its complexity: "Senegalese salsa," Dijonaise sauce, and the overly sweet pineapple-infused jasmine rice cake. The Moroccan salmon, served with couscous and a light peanut-palm sauce, hits the right notes on simplicity. So does the calamari, slathered in a spicy Senegalese joloff sauce, which manages to be spicy but not overpowering. Any missteps in the kitchen, however, are made up for by the professional and friendly service and the BYOB policy.
