Perry Street Description:
As the sun sets over the Hudson River, its last rays filter through floor-to-ceiling windows and illuminate the serene interior of Perry St.---a restaurant in Jean-Georges Vongerichten's gastronomic empire. Unlike the exoticism of Spice Market and the extravagance of Jean-Georges, this eatery is his elegantly casual neighborhood place, where soft, curvy banquettes and an earthy color palette soften the linear lines of Richard Meier's modern glass-covered building. Amidst mellow music and the melodious chatter of the chic crowd, the conscientious staff serves up very pleasing New American cuisine with hints of worldly panache, such as Japanese snapper sashimi with lemon, olive oil and crispy skin. Wispy frisée is paired with crumbled goat cheese, pickled peaches and the subtle heat of crystallized wasabi. A mound of shiitake mushrooms covers fresh asparagus and is topped with a poached egg. Entrées include butter-poached lobster with fresh togarashi egg noodles and fragrant miso broth, and grilled tenderloin of beef with smoked paprika butternut squash and caramelized Brussels sprouts. Lastly, a choice dessert is a wedge of cream cheese cake topped with a row of garden-fresh strawberries accompanied by a spoonful of sweet strawberry sorbet.
