Union Square Café Description:
The first feather in Danny Meyer's cap, Union Square Café remains a polished place to eat---from the greeting to the checkroom to the bar to the waiters to the kitchen to the wines to the art on the walls. Chef/co-owner Michael Romano's American food with rustic Italian accents is still solid, from the Union Square Café burger served on a fresh poppy seed bun, a lunchtime favorite, to the ricotta gnocchi with tomato-basil passatina and pecorino romano or the grilled smoked Cedar River shell steak with summer beans and slow roasted tomatoes for dinner. Every night, there's a different homey special. The three comfortably casual dining areas have wood floors, green wainscoting and ample space between tables. Or you can eat at the bar, sampling wines by the glass while enjoying a casual meal. A long list of dessert wines accompanies the mostly American-style desserts, such as the signature warm banana tart with macadamia nut brittle. Wines are something of a signature as well. The impressive---and fairly priced---international list is organized by varietal and flavor rather than by country or region, which may help you decide among the more than 200 choices.
