Hudson River Cafe Description:
Hudson River Café, set against both an urban and a river backdrop, offers a fresh take on seafood and grill, with Latin and soulful overtones. The bi-level restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating on two levels, with live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and during Sunday brunch. Downstairs has more of a bistro-bar vibe while upstairs, under the vaulted ceiling, is a calmer dining setting. Beautifully presented appetizers include the spring leaf salad, coconut-crusted shrimp in a fiery Thai chili sauce, and arctic char ceviche. The restaurant's Maine lobster roll is a major contender against others found in the West Village, made only with whole pieces of lobster and the right touch of butter. The churrasco steak is as fine as any piece of meat that we've seen in Argentina, although the lamb comes with a sauce that is a bit too sweet. But, perhaps, the pièce de résistance is a well prepared seafood paella, named Max's paella after the owner to distinguish it from Hamlet's paella which is made from a medley of meats. Creative cocktails are named after landmarks in Harlem with a knockout martini made from white cranberry juice, gin and English cucumber. If you like desserts, the Latin-influenced tres leches cake and the guava bread pudding are stars.
