Mr. K's Description:
You wouldn't really guess it from the name, but Mr. K's is one of the Big Apple's most highly regarded Chinese restaurants. The interior features graceful banquettes and easy chairs, museum-grade jade artifacts and glass cases of celebrity chopsticks (call ahead and you can have personalized ones awaiting your visit). Johnny Kao, whose Washington Mr. K's has thrived for many years, offers a slightly Westernized menu of dishes presented with style and gorgeous table appointments. Appetizers include a stuffed tofu roll (layers of marinated tofu sheets stuffed with sautéed mushrooms and vegetables) and crispy beef (shredded beef with soy-scallion glaze and vinegar). Entrées include chicken with roasted macadamia nuts and honey-braised pork ribs. Seafood-lovers may opt for the crispy sea bass or the basil-ginger prawns. The globe-spanning wine list is good, but on the pricey side.
