Artie's New York Delicatessen Description:
Food writers occasionally debate what constitutes New York cuisine, but when it comes to the deli few can deny that a pastrami-stuffed sandwich on two pieces of rye is anything other than the Big Apple. And Artie's, nearly an Upper West Side institution, is at the top of the (pastrami) heap, harkening back to the salad days of the deli. Sandwich specials include all the classics (including corned beef, chopped liver and pastrami), but adventurous eaters will also find sandwiches made with beef tongue. We particularly like the Reubens, which are crammed with oodles of sauerkraut (and your choice of meat) and rich Russian dressing. The Southern fried chicken and the Romanian steak aren't as successful, but who treks up to this legendary deli for something other than a Big Apple-size sandwich anyway?
