Set on an improbably quiet block across from Grand Central Station, this haute Greek eatery (Ammos means "sand" in Greek) is an ideal blend of contemporary and rustic styles. The interior sees wood beams compete with industrial tubing while the menu offers Mediterranean dishes that are simplistic yet miles beyond what one might find in, say, Astoria. The kitchen offers a menu that's rightfully loaded with seafood. The thick and crispy fennel-accented squid---a finicky dish---are nicely grilled and not the slightest bit chewy. The cast iron-seared foie gras works well with a tangy cherry sauce. Likewise, jumbo scallops are oddly paired with pancetta, but the combination is a wonder on the taste buds. Seafood crudo---which changes depending on availability---is fresh and drenched in aromatic olive oil.
