Congee Village would need to be in the running among any Chinese restaurants that are considered New York institutions. This maze-like eatery, located between Chinatown and the Lower East Side, has something for everyone. And by that, we mean diners used to Americanized Chinese food as well as more adventurous eaters. Stick with the lesser known dishes and it's hard to go wrong---this doesn't necessarily mean, however, you have to order duck's blood with ginger and scallion, goose intestine with soy sauce, or cold jellyfish. But you should try the pork ribs encrusted with shrimp paste for a new twist on a carnivorous dish. Or the house-special chicken, which is topped with dozens of roasted garlic cloves. The namesake dish, congee, a porridge-like rice dish mixed with various meats, is warming on a cold night. Portions are large so come hungry.
