Campo Restaurant Description:
This Upper West Side eatery, sibling to neighborhood stalwart Nonna, is an under-the-radar spot that most New Yorkers wouldn't think to travel uptown for. After all, you can't throw a suppli ball in the city without hitting another Italian restaurant. But diners should consider making Campo a destination. The menu offers a long list of starters, mostly in the form of affordable cured meats and cheeses. The arancini (fried rice balls) are refreshingly devoid of greasiness and taste like they're straight from a bar in Rome. There's nothing terribly new in the list of pasta dishes, but they're executed authentically. The spaghetti carbonara is done right (that is, without cream), with a perfectly crispy pancetta. The diver scallops, though over-embellished with too many distracting vegetables, are buttery and just right, complemented by prosciutto. The wine list travels the globe and offers some affordable bottles.
