This tiny French-Caribbean eatery, wedged somewhere in the hinterlands between SoHo and TriBeCa at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. Chef-part-owner Sébastian Aubert sautés and stews and simmers in the open walk-in closet-sized kitchen while a waitress charms guests. Narrow and decorated with a hodgepodge of stars tucked in corners and tacked to the walls, the room is barely big enough for a dozen small tables. The BYOB policy (note: no corkage fee) adds to the fun vibe.

But it's easy to see how this myth got started: chef-part-owner Sébastian Aubert sautés and stews and simmers in the open walk-in closet-sized kitchen while a waitress charms guests. The BYOB policy (note: no corkage fee) adds to the fun vibe. But there are many more reasons why New Yorkers make the trek here (and wait outside for a table). For starters, there's the Scottish pheasant pâté with truffle oil and Brie, less traditional in its layered chunkiness. The grilled organic avocado with spinach mousse is a most memorable appetizer. Though there are only a few items on the menu (and few rotate), it's impossible to make a bad choice: from the wild boar sausage soaked in blueberry sauce to the roast duck leg in a mango marinade. And with nothing priced over $12, it's easy to understand the nightly sidewalk-looming crowd.
