Defonte's Description:
The original Defonte's (still making sandwiches in Brooklyn) started in 1922 and is now a borough institution. This narrow sandwich shop in Gramercy Park is much like the original: chaos is a part of the experience. Service is friendly if a tad brusque at times (thanks to the customer overload) and the employees (including members of the Defonte family) scream out ingredients, opting for the Italian-American pronunciations (think: pershut instead of prosciutto). Sandwiches are massive. The hearty roast beef is topped off by a nice dripping of sauce on the inside of the bun and the mile-high corned beef is about as good as anywhere in the city. Other favorites include the pork hero and the Cuban sandwich.
