Harborside Restaurant & Grand Description:
Harborside Restaurant & Grand Ballroom is housed inside one of Newport Beach's most famed landmarks, the Balboa Pavilion. Built in 1905 as a towering Victorian structure over Newport's sparkling harbor, this huge wooden building now holds a restaurant, bar and 500-seat ballroom upstairs. Guests sit dockside gazing at the blue water, boats, rolling hills and mountains. The extensive menu by chef Joel Lambert is built mainly around fresh seafood, as well as traditional California and American favorites with French and Asian influences. Start with the crisp and tender calamari, the clam chowder or a classic spinach salad with egg, toasted pecans, blue cheese and bacon-shallot vinaigrette. Entrées feature lots of salads (ahi, Cobb, king crab Louie), seafood (seared scallops, baked halibut, Alaskan king crab legs, blackened sea bass, Maine lobster) and roasted meats (pork rib, lamb shank, filet mignon, Prime sirloin, New York steak, pot roast). The nightly three-course prix-fixe menu is a good buy and comes with a glass of premium wine. The wine list, although not large, is respectable with about two dozen selections available by the glass. On Sundays, come for the reasonable buffet brunch with free-flowing Champagne. Happy hour in the bar runs daily from noon-7 p.m., and features $4 appetizers, beer, wine and cocktails.
