Pelican Grill Description:
You know the picturesque coastline of Newport Coast is just down the hill with its crashing waves and cliff-side scenery, but here on Pelican Hill you only see golf greens and the wide blue Pacific in the distance. Situated inside the Pelican Hill Golf Club, Pelican Grill is part upscale golf clubhouse and lounge and part fine dining restaurant. The menu, overseen by chef Trip Maudlin, relies heavily on the wood-fired stove, so order up a gourmet pizza with a microbrew or a wood-roasted chicken with a glass of wine for lunch. Some come here just for the restaurant's signature tortilla soup, which is rather spicy and comes with shredded chicken and fresh avocados. Entrée highlights include the bourbon-brined skirt steak, herb-crusted line-caught salmon and the curry-coconut jumbo prawns. Chef Maudlin shines best on Wednesdays when he cooks up several "surf and turf specials," such as succulent seared scallops and a savory pork filet mignon. You can also bypass the main dining room and head straight into the sophisticated lounge, where you can catch the game on two impressive big screens and watch everyone from Newport's elite to A-list stars take a breather after a day on the adjacent world-class golf course.
