As one of the few constants on Crown Street, New Haven's ever-changing restaurant row, Samurai seems to be doing something right. Maybe it's the casually intimate vibe emanating from two simple, fireplace-graced dining rooms and the small sushi bar. Maybe it's a kitchen that rarely falters, especially when it comes to noodles. Maybe it's the prices, low relative to most Japanese tabs. Most likely it's all of the above. Begin your meal with very nicely done basics: miso soup, seaweed salad, lettuce invigorated by a vivid ginger dressing. Continue with particularly good carbohydrates---delicate shu mai, sturdy nabeyaki udon with chicken and shrimp, curry beef ramen. Stick with the standards from the sushi bar too---tuna, yellowtail, salmon, eel---and you'll be able to attest firsthand to Samurai's staying power.
