Situated in the Taft Hotel's grand old ballroom, the New Haven branch of Hot Tomato's is striking, from the dramatic winding staircase and ornate, inlaid ceiling to the open kitchen, which turns out a repertoire nearly identical to that of the Hartford flagship---one that emphasizes the freshest fish, certified Angus beef and the choicest of greens. Swift and amiable servers begin your meal with the signature garlic bread---a mini-loaf loaded with four cheeses and enough garlic to keep vampires at bay for at least a year. Move on to eggplant fries with fresh tomato sauce and shaved Grana Padana; then prepare for first-rate pasta such as four-cheese tortellini with sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes or spicy chicken, sausage and veal stew with fennel, mushrooms, and mixed peppers over egg fettuccine. Perched adjacent to the Shubert Theater, Hot Tomato's makes for perfect pre- or post-theater dining. Actually, the place itself is pure theater.
