Black Trumpet Description:
While Black Trumpet Bistro is all about local and seasonal goods, chef Evan Mallett also channels his passion for the cuisines of the Mediterranean---Italy, Spain, North Africa---and even draws from his experiences in Mexico to develop his sun-drenched, sometimes exotic repertoire. Thanks to a menu composed of dishes in various sizes, the fun here is in sampling and sharing bold flavors in judicious amounts, from spicy Moorish meatballs with a raita-like cucumber yogurt to porter-steamed mussels with pumpernickel pudding and cheddar. We recommend splitting main courses as well---Asturian cazador stew with rabbit, pheasant, pork and house-made chorizo, for instance, is almost (but not quite) too hearty. Try the meze plate to start or to snack on---three innovative dishes that delight, many sourced from local waters. The menu changes every six weeks but the vibe stays the same with a romance that suffuses the place: enjoy the view of Portsmouth Harbor from the upstairs wine bar or the cave-like coziness downstairs.
