Rotier's Restaurant Description:
Rotier's is contradiction embodied: it's glorious and chaotic; luxurious and dingy. The proprietors do keep regular hours, yes, but sometimes in the summer you'll find dark windows and a "Gone Fishing" sign on the door. The décor hasn't changed since 1945, and the service is sometimes surly, but there's no place Nashville treasures more. Family matriarch Evelyn Rotier---known as Mama Rotier or Miz Rotier to devoted customers--and her late husband, John, opened the restaurant decades ago, when burgers were 25 cents, soft drinks a nickel and beer a quarter. Regulars come for Southern plate lunches, spaghetti, and other thoroughly American fare. From chicken gizzards to pot roast to tuna sandwiches and fried shrimp baskets, it's the kind of food that every family-owned eatery served 30 years ago. You can even order cheese and crackers as an appetizer. There are two standout dishes here unmatched in Nashville: the grilled cheeseburger and the milkshake. The latter isn't even on the menu; order it if you're dining with locals you want to impress.
