Caffe Nonna Description:
The magic behind Caffè Nonna originates with the marinara-streaked recipe box of chef Daniel Maggipinto's grandmother. She's also the namesake of this beloved neighborhood haunt, and she and Maggipinto, with partner Robert Sillers, have made a lasting name for themselves when it comes to Italian food in Nashville. If you can't decide between the braised lamb shank and the grilled chicken over spinach gnocchi, whip up your own dish from the list of pastas, sauces and toppings. The basilica sauce, packed with tomatoes and tender onions in a white wine bath, is a standout. Try one of the artisan pizzas (a basic margherita that may be customized with special toppings) for a lesson on how a disc of dough ought to be done. For dessert, the house-made gelato is usually your best bet. With just under 40 seats in the small, rustic space, reservations are a good idea. The wine list is serviceable if not memorable, but that's what the food is for here.
