Chez Lulu Description:
The name comes from a French euphemism for a bordello, but this café is more red-walled gourmet bohemian than red-light district. A Brazilian drum corps, tribal belly dancers and Moroccan gypsy fiddlers have all entertained here. Owner Carole Griffin offers gourmet sandwiches on rustic hearth-baked breads from her adjacent business, Continental Bakery. These breads are also handy for scooping up an olive tapenade or roasted red pepper spread. La Doba a la Nissarda is a long-simmered beef with red wine and vegetables. We like the hand-tossed pizza with three cheeses and salami and there's a good list of toppings to create your own. The small, well-chosen and gently priced wine list complements the cuisine. While bread pudding and seasonal pies finish the meal nicely, the swirl tarte with dark and white Callebaut Belgian chocolate is a standout. Sunday brunch offerings feature savory and sweet crêpes including ham with Mornay sauce, fromage blanc with blueberry sauce, and chocolate-hazelnut.
