Café Soy Inc Description:
Located near the corner of Fairmount and St. Laurent, Soy is both literally and figuratively far from Chinatown. Chef Suzanne Liu draws much of her inspiration from Chinese traditions, but she and her multicultural kitchen staff revisit them in a modern manner, even as they add Thai, Japanese or Korean dishes to the menu. The lime-green facade, simply featuring the restaurant's name, clearly states its case: the clichés of Chinese restaurants are not on the menu here. Inside, the brick wall and straightforward but elegant chairs and plates give the restaurant a laid-back yet trendy feeling. The same goes for the food, which allows for a quick lunch as well as an elaborate dinner with wine or saké. General Tso's chicken benefits from a personal touch without losing its essential character, while a dish of sesame and peanut noodles with chicken and cucumber sets you in a more unexpected direction. Pad thai is luscious and, like the General Tso's chicken, is nicely balanced between personal interpretation and tradition. Fish dishes are especially original.
