Craftsman Restaurant Description:
Named for the blocks and blocks of cozy bungalows that line the surrounding neighborhood, The Craftsman is really two places in one. First is its topnotch burger-and-beer identity, the burgers being two-fisted monsters (ground turkey slathered with chive aïoli, bacon-and-venison with melted blue cheese, or the standard beef topped with aged white cheddar and harissa). Its accompanying beer list consists of small-batch Minnesota and Wisconsin brews. Second, it's a first-rate dinner destination, with a menu that showcases local proteins---trout, elk, rabbit, grass-fed beef---without forgetting that vegetarians want something tempting from the surrounding larder. Chef Mike Phillips more than dabbles in charcuterie---he's an expert. He's also fascinated by root vegetables, which means that beets and potatoes get the star treatment. The best dessert is a rich, gutsy ginger-stout cake. Luckily, the kids' menu actually pays attention to making basics like mac 'n' cheese or spaghetti taste so good that grown-ups will want to sneak a bite. The sheltered patio is a sweet summertime getaway.
