We live in strange times when the word for a dried, smoked jalapeño pepper makes it into the title of what is essentially a fast-food restaurant. But we're not complaining. In the case of Chipotle Mexican Grill, the idea is not an ambitious exploration of hot zone cuisine but rather to take the California burrito stand (complete with bigger-than-your-head burritos) and make them mainstream. The menu printed on the wall above the kitchen is minimal and direct. You order your meat (or your vegetables) and your toppings and wait for your reward at the end of the caféteria line. When it's crowded the quality can suffer, though through no fault of the hustling counter help---there is simply too much demand. When it's less crowded, however, the burritos, stuffed with steak, peppers, salsa and cheese, are a fresh, efficient marvel. Other locations.
