Mader's German Restaurant Description:
A landmark downtown German restaurant (and Hummel figurine shop), operating since 1900.
Viennese buffet brunch is served on Sunday from 11a.m.-2p.m.
Looking as though it were magically transported from a forest in Germany, Mader's is replete with rich woodwork and stained glass. There is also a huge gallery of autographed photos from people who have been dining here since the restaurant opened in 1902, including Paul Newman and John F. Kennedy. Started by an ambitious young German immigrant who poured his life savings into the venture, Mader's fared well until the unthinkable happened. When Prohibition struck in 1919, the restaurant somehow survived; on that joyous night of April 7, 1933, Mader's served the first legal stein of beer in Milwaukee after the law was repealed. Today, Mader's continues to serve tall steins of German beer and standout food. For a good start to a meal, try the sausage and cheese platter, containing Milwaukee's own Usinger's sausages. The house salad comes with Mader's signature hot bacon dressing. Roast pork shank, served with apple demi glaze, is one of Mader's most notable entrées---with good reason. It's been on the menu since opening day.
