Pelican Description:
This brightly colored Italian-Mediterranean restaurant is situated on the ground floor and front porch of the Pelican Hotel. The modern industrial décor of the eatery makes sense in light of the hotel being owned by the hi-tech Diesel clothing company. Appetizers like seared Sonoma foie gras in raisin-cinnamon brioche offer hints that this isn't your grandma's Italian cooking. Particularly fetching among homemade pastas is bucatini Amatriciana which features flecks of pancetta and pecorino cheese in a spicy tomato sauce. The cuisine won't have you doing cartwheels but the menu does show some depth---entrées range from boldly flavored saké-marinated mahi mahi accompanied by baby bok choy and ginger-spiked red chili to comforting roasted chicken with mashed potatoes. A great South Beach lunch can be had by grabbing a table outside on Ocean Drive and sharing one of Pelican's wood-fired pizzas, big salads and a bottle from what has become an exceptional wine list.
