Regional Mexican folk art and festive ceramic tile-topped tables set the tone at the Ortiz family's two festive Mexican restaurants---which are far more authentic than their name suggests. Both "ranches" brim with home-cooking aromas emanating from platters of enchiladas, flautas, fajitas and specialty items such as traditional tortilla soup, chicken mole poblano, unique camaron empanizado (jumbo shrimp, breaded before basting with garlic sauce, served with chipotle salsa), vegetarian chiles rellenos de queso, some of the tastiest fish tacos north of the border, and cochinita pibil, the Yucatan slow-cooked pork dish. Then again, members of the bubbly staff at El Rancho Grande seem less concerned with food than they are with mastering the margarita. The selection of 150 tequilas is impressive as is the reasonable cost for a nine-ounce Cuervo Gold margarita. The Don Julio margarita on the rocks suggests a slightly cayenne-infused lemonade, the way a margarita is intended to taste. But even a pitcher of the most basic house margaritas, made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, will knock your socks off (in every way imaginable).
