Restaurant Mi Peru Description:
There's nothing fancy about this place; in fact, the main décor accents are pictures of the traditional Peruvian dishes served. But though this neighborhood does have a few other Peruvian places with snazzier ambience, Mi Peru has a slight edge in the authentic flavors of classic favorites like papas a la huancaina (cold potatoes in cheese sauce), jalea (a mountain of lightly breaded deep-fried seafood, balanced by raw onion rings and a piquant citrus mojo), and ceviches that are both reliably fresh and subtly citrus-"cooked"---not, as in many traditional preparations, over-soaked till acrid. There's good value for money here, too; typically, single portions serve two. But the real bonus is the Ceasar's (yes, that's really how the manufacturer spells it) Ice Cream served for dessert. Locally made, the gelato-like creamy confections come in unusual tropical fruit flavors like guanabana (custard apple), tangy-sweet maracuya (passion fruit) or lucuma, Peru's favorite---like an exotic pumpkin pie fruit.
