Buena Vista Bistro Description:
The word "bistro" can mean almost anything these days. But this budget-priced place (located just a few blocks north of the purely commercial Design District, in mostly-residential Buena Vista) is the sort found at the source---i.e. every few blocks in any French urban center: a home-away-from-home, with lots better food. A labor of love run by Claude and Callie Postel (he formerly an upscale restaurant chef-owner in Quebec; she the maître d'), this eatery is a hangout where locals feel comfortable dropping by any time for tasty, traditional cheap eats and-or a glass of honest wine. The blackboard-only menu changes daily, depending on what the chef finds at the market that morning. But one must-have is rillettes de Mans, a rustic relative of sophisticated pâtés and terrines that's rarely found in the U.S.: unctuously buttery, not even a little bit healthy, irresistible. Other standouts include a hefty crab cake, caprese salad drizzled with a refined basil sauce (rather than just the fresh leaves), zingy scallops Provençal, grouper with textbook beurre blanc, and hand-cut house-made frites. Important note: The chef comes from a family of French pâtissiers, so this is not a place to skip dessert.
