Area 31 Restaurant Description:
Don't be confused by the number. Unlike the Conrad's Level 25 restaurants, the name of EPIC hotel's Area 31 does not refer to the floor this sleek spot occupies. (It's on 16.) The name's a reference to Fishing Area 31, the massive expanse of Atlantic/Gulf/Caribbean waters stretching from the Carolinas to northern South America, from which the restaurant's ecologically admirable, sustainable species of fish and shellfish come. What's not regional to these waters: the dishes' preparation, which is Mediterranean-inspired, mainly Italian, though not enough like anything one would encounter in that country to make the menu's Italian terminology ("secondi," "contorni," etc.) anything but sort of silly. Large plates on the limited menu include both chef-created seafood and meat entrées or pastas and, for fish fans, simply grilled selections with mix-and-match sauces; wahoo (a regional mackerel which, unlike most of its gamey-tasting relatives, has beautifully mild, firm flesh) with lemony olive oil-herb sauce is one of the most appealing choices. Our first pick, though, would be a grazing meal of small plates on the expansive outdoor deck: light-battered fritto misto plus globally-flavored contemporary crudos, paired with the particularly innovative and cosmopolitan cocktails of master mixologist Jacques Bezuidenhout.
