Joey's Description:
Developer Joey Goldman and his wife, Thea, helped create a café district in the cutting edge arts area of Wynwood, and opened Joey's, a stylish, sociable indoor-outdoor hangout that serves authentic Italian food at bargain prices. Properly al dente pastas start at $6, and fresh, never tired, salads at $3; the priciest entrée (lamb chops with polenta and a juniper berry reduction) tops out at $24. But especially recommended are the wood-oven pizzas, with thin, blistered crusts and imaginative toppings. On paper a few sound so risky---like the Dolce e Piccante, with figs, Gorgonzola, honey and hot red pepper---it seems dubious they'd work, but, due to the beautiful sense of balance displayed by chef Ivo Mazzon (who is from Italy's Veneto region), they do. Our favorite is the Carbonara, with fresh mozzarella, bacon, creamy soft-baked eggs, and crisp asparagus. Wines basically range from only minimally marked-up $55-$150 Super Tuscans to thoughtfully chosen super-saver bottles for $25-$30, though there are a few $1,000 Bordeaux first growth reds for wealthy art patrons, too. Note: While the surrounding area can be unnerving after dark, valet parking at the door makes the adventure perfectly safe.
