Outsiders might be more likely to equate Memphis barbecue with Food Network stars Gina and Pat Neely, but their uncle Jim pioneered the family's 'cue legacy. In the early 1980s, insurance salesman Jim Neely converted an old rundown storefront into a thriving barbecue business. His signature method of slow-cooking meat with indirect heat makes for some of the most tender ribs served anywhere in the city, and Neely's dark, rich barbecue sauce is second to none. The décor is no-frills, and the variety of smoked meats on the menu is daunting. There are pork ribs, beef ribs, chopped or sliced pork or deli-trimmed beef, chicken, turkey, beef links, bologna and more. Be sure to try the barbecue spaghetti, a Memphis original, and pick up a bottle of sauce to take home. The atmosphere of this family-owned restaurant is laid-back and casual, and there's also the take-out option, made easy by the drive-through window.
