Brother Juniper's College Inn Description:
Originally launched in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district in the 1960s as an outreach mission for street people, Brother Juniper's soon expanded its five-cent-per-cup coffee operation across the country. Today, the Memphis shop is the only Brother Juniper's still in business; Jonathan and Pauline Koplin purchased the restaurant in 1999. The breakfast spot specializes in fluffy omelets, like the San Diegan (an open-face omelet piled high with home fries, sour cream, mushrooms, bacon, feta and cheddar cheese). Also on the menu are sandwiches, quesadillas and even scrambled tofu platters. Be sure to ask for the shop's locally famous spreadable fruit to accompany the whole-wheat toast. Arrive early on the weekends to ensure seating since Brother Juniper's fills up fast. In good weather, the outdoor seating is positioned in a fine English garden in front.
