This Chevy Chase restaurant is so crowded and abuzz with lively chatter that you'd best make dinner reservations in advance, or face not getting a table and a chance to sample some of the area's very best Indian food. We are dazzled by the chef's efforts and the eatery's clever delving into traditional Indian cooking. Even the names of the dishes roll off the tongue like exotic poetry: chicken chettinad, uppu kari, duck varatha curry, and Alleppey fish curry. Try the Syrian lamb fry seasoned with cardamom, clover, cinnamon and coconut strips or the pao bhaji, a spicy mix of veggies and potatoes with the special pao bread to start. For an entrée, go for the aforementioned chicken, a fiery dish that lives up to the menu's warning of "buyer beware"; a tamer option is the chicken curry Indique---chicken simmered in coconut milk. The breads are first-rate, and desserts include the shreekand brule (yogurt, pistachios and saffron) and parupe pradhamam (lentils, jaggary, cashews, cardamom and raisins). A selection of typical Indian street snack foods adds more depth and breadth to the menu.
