Blue Sky Description:
Chef Lydia Shire made her name at Boston's Biba and the legendary Locke-Ober, but her childhood summers in York, Maine brought her back to this resort town where fine dining---in the downtown beach area at least---had been scarce. Her menu is extensive and a bit confusing, divided by starters and "Maine," and also separated by cooking style and "lobster," but the very knowledgeable staff can guide you through it all with enthusiastic descriptions of dishes like lobster deep-fried in house-made lard, served with beans baked in a piping hot cast-iron pot, or tender charcoaled duck---crisp and smoky and strewn with tart pomegranate pips. Signatures like Lydia's lamb pizza are good for sharing and pairing with a wine list that's heavy on California labels (but there are some topnotch Spanish reds, too, as well as some nice Rieslings). The bar crowd is lively and the bar menu less "dear" than in the dining room. Since this is one of the handsomest restaurants in the area, with a mod, funky décor and an open balcony with an ocean view, you'll just want to sit, to see and be seen, so be sure to linger over a classic caramel pot de crème or steamed chocolate cake.
