Caiola's Description:
Chef/owner Abby Harmon and co-owner Lisa Vaccaro operate this popular West-End American cuisine restaurant. This neighborhood restaurant has similar price points as other comparable establishments.
With its old brick-lined, curving streets, the West End is Portland's quaintest neighborhood, and Caiola's is the West End's quintessential neighborhood restaurant. Housed on a leafy section of little Pine Street, it feels out of the way without actually being hard to get to (it's walkable from downtown). Chef Abby Harmon became known for her topnotch seafood at Street and Co., and the fish at Caiola's is always spot-on (try the scallops in saffron sauce when they're available). But it is also nice to see what Harmon can do with terrestrial ingredients (nearly all of them obtained locally). Her menu has Mediterranean leanings, but American comfort food (like a gourmet burger or mac 'n' cheese) sneaks in as well. The down-to-earth spot is cozy inside, and the bar hums pleasantly, but the patio out back is the place to be in the summertime. Just about any wine you order will be affordable. If only the nearby condos were too; then Caiola's could be everyone's home away from home.
