Jack Fry's Description:
Jack Fry's, named after the bookie and bootlegger who operated a café here for years, offers potent cocktails that are probably stronger that Fry (who needed to stretch his liquor supply) would have served. But the live piano-woodwind jazz would sound familiar to him. (Truth be told, it does make polite conversation difficult at dinner. Come for lunch if you are doing a business deal.) Elegant Southern and Continental-inspired dishes anchor the menu. For starters, you'll find such savories as spicy fried oysters accented with country ham served on creamy grits and sautéed shrimp with red-eye gravy. The entrée pork chop has a vermouth glaze, and the veal loin gets a boost from country ham, too. A well-kept secret is that Jack Fry's is one of the best places in town to order seafood. Pan-seared halibut is served with a coconut, soy and ginger vinaigrette. And a groaning-good signature dish is the lobster campanelle---lobster tails tossed with bacon, sun-dried tomatoes, jalapeños and other ingredients plus pasta and dressed with rosemary shallot olive oil. Waitstaff clad in white shirts and black aprons impart sage advice about both wine and the desserts, which change nightly. Any of the homemade ice creams or sorbets is highly recommended.
