Ole Hickory Pit Description:
E. K. Ramage, who started this operation almost two decades ago, prepares most of the dishes from scratch, including the fried corn bread, white beans with ham hock, mac 'n' cheese, potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. All are served up alongside the lovingly smoked and pulled meats, including ribs, pork, chicken and ham. But the specialty is Western Kentucky-style mutton, and it's the only place in Louisville where you can get it. The sandwich, piled high with sweet, gamey, smoky meat, is mighty fine with new potatoes, country-style beans or silver dollar-size corn cakes on the side. Old Hickory Pit is easy to spot from the road; it's housed in a barn-like building with a truck-size pig perched on the roof.
