Red Maple Restaurant & Lounge Description:
This neighborhood restaurant and longtime politico hangout near the Gretna courthouse is enlivened by the Creole- and Cajun-inspired dishes that fill its menu. Steaks are still made with the typical sauces and joined by uninventive side dishes, but now lunch also may yield a delightfully seasoned, thick and hearty corn and crab bisque. An evening standout is the pepper-glazed porterhouse pork chop. For hearty appetites, stuffed mirliton, the mild green vegetable sometimes called chayote, is fried crisp on the outside leaving it smooth as custard inside. The mirliton comes topped with a few of Orleanians' favorite things: shrimp, crab meat, fried oysters and andouille sausage, all tossed around in a slick of garlicky butter. Despite the menu updates, the Red Maple's series of interconnected rooms and layers of additions give the place the feel of having been around practically forever.
