Phó Tàu Bay Description:
Before Katrina, the family-run Phó Tàu Bay was a mini-empire with locations throughout the New Orleans area. Now, only the original restaurant on the West Bank remains. As always, however, the soups are enough to draw the restaurant's dévotées from wide and far. One of the best renditions features thin beef slices cooked at the table in pots of bubbling broth teeming with noodles, ready for some of the lemon, hot pepper, bean sprouts and herbs in a side basket. We like the crispy, delicately flavored imperial rolls filled with crab meat, ground pork and vermicelli. Likewise, the Saigon taco, a moist yet crispy Vietnamese crêpe, is stuffed with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. Vietnamese-style po' boys, bulging with crisp, raw vegetables and meats, are another specialty, as are spring rolls with a dipping sauce. Any suggestion of dreariness due to the interior of this Vietnamese restaurant is banished by the topnotch food.
