Rosa Mexicano Description:
Who would have thought that a chain restaurant in a mall would dish up some of the city's best Mexican fare? Despite sounding all wrong, this restaurant really gets it right, offering diners contemporary Mexican dishes in a stylish, relaxed setting. The best tables are booths beneath azure blue cascading water walls with jutting sculptures of Acapulco cliff divers. For starters there's the entertaining signature guacamole en molcajete, which is mixed tableside in a lava mortar, green, fresh and piquant. Then leave it to the chef---in this case John England, whose New Mexican culinary roots lend a deft sophistication to handsome presentations that taste as good as they look. A standout tortilla pie layers rich roasted pulled duck between soft corn tortillas, drenched in a nuanced yellow pepper-habanero sauce. Subtler but no less pleasing is the quesadilla de huitlacoche (a delectable Mexican fungus) that delicately incorporates poblano chilies and corn. For mains, try the haute enchiladas---especially the mole de xico of shredded, savory chipotle beef in a complex Veracruz mole featuring plantains, hazelnuts, pine nuts, ancho and pasilla chilies. Equally compelling is the luxe jumbo lump crab meat enchilada blanketed in creamy tomatillo sauce, or a tender, moist slow-cooked pork wrapped in banana leaves.
