Downtown's hipster haunt, Nickel Diner, dishes up a new generation of diner eats in a long forgotten part of 5th and Main. It's the second downtown eatery from restaurateurs Monica May and Kristen Trattner (Banquette) and the looks of the place are nostalgic: vintage lamps hang from a soaring ceiling, red leatherette booths accommodate the eclectic clientele and old menu signs adorn the walls. The food retains the essence of diner fare, but is turned upscale in dishes like salmon-and-leek scramble, cinnamon brioche french toast, stuffed avocado with quinoa salad, a spicy pulled-pork sandwich and a BLT with arugula. Best of all, breakfast and lunch prices are all under $12.
