Mom's Tamales Description:
Upstairs, beyond its nondescript pumpkin-colored façade is an unexpectedly charming enclosed patio that serves as Mom's dining room. With its muraled walls, decorative china and vintage family photos, this is a popular place---in addition to satisfying the locals, it draws students from USC and families from Pasadena---for a wide variety of Mexican dishes. For breakfast, the machaca and chilaquiles are standouts, while chile relleno, huaraches and carne asada tacos are favorites at lunch and dinner. The famous tamales that Mom originally sold out of the trunk of her car---still an incredible bargain at $1.50 apiece---are available with chicken mole, beef, jalapeño and cheese, pork, spinach and cheese, as well as sweet corn (a signature) and pineapple for dessert. The proportion of the moist and flavorful masa to the meat or cheese filling makes these some of the best in town. Mom's is a good spot to remember for parties.
