Mochica Description:
A few blocks from Exposition Park sits the Mercado La Paloma, a charming and colorful little indoor marketplace with Mexican crafts, tropical smoothies and casual Latin eateries. Chef-owner Ricardo Zarate has staked out a pretty, airy corner here for his sophisticated yet reasonably priced contemporary Peruvian cuisine. A veteran of upscale Japanese restaurants like Wabi-Sabi in Venice, Zarate's specialty is fish---especially ceviche. Daily choices rotate depending on the season and market, but one day you might find a sea bass ceviche arriving in an artful, glistening tower, nestled with a few kernels of roasted Peruvian corn and sweet potato. It's a less typical ceviche, with a more nuanced and complex citrusy sauce than found elsewhere. Another specialty is the causa del dia, or potato salad of the day, such as one layered with a creamy crab salad and avocado. For mains, try the lomo saltado, a savory beef filet sliced thin, with Peruvian salsa and fries. The fish of the day is a sure bet, whether it's barracuda, snapper or sea bass, fresh and nicely sautéed.
