Gobi Mongolian Barbeque House Description:
Silverlakers frequent this chic little Sunset Boulevard spot for a new kind of Mongolian barbecue experience. Instead of clichéd golden dragon kitsch, here you'll find earth-toned décor, atmospheric lighting and artsy Zen touches. To add to the heightened Eastside consciousness, the meats---chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, pork, and tiger shrimp---are all natural, and the wide-ranging selection of fresh vegetables is organic, local and seasonal. Even the sauces lean postmodern with Asian pesto, lemon grass and chimichurri, and no MSG. The DIY aspect is a central part of the fun---select a bowlful of meat (or tofu), vegetables, sauces and noodles, and bring it to the chef at the giant, round grill. He stir-fries it with a giant paddle as you watch, then returns your steaming bowl within minutes. We especially enjoyed the tender lamb and the tiger shrimp, which are plump, fresh and sweet. Saké and cocktails include pomegranate martinis and margaritas with fresh lime and agave wine; a well-chosen artisan ale list includes a tasty Siamese Twin Ale tinged with kaffir lime leaves and lemon grass, the perfect foil if you like your noodles spicy.
