Eva Restaurant Description:
With his first restaurant, chef-owner Mark Gold created a neighborhood bistro named after his grandmother and daughter. The décor is simple and contemporary, with black-and-white food photographs on the walls, and there is a covered outdoor patio in the back. The jovial, unpretentious servers---clad in T-shirts and tennis shoes---and paper covering the white linen tablecloths play a part in setting the casual tone. Gold's short market-driven menu changes regularly to showcase seasonal ingredients (which also often pop up in vegetable-based cocktails). Diners may find peekytoe crab with carrot relish and puffed rice; appetizing burrata ravioli; or foie gras terrine for starters. Continue with halibut with morels, lemon, greens and mustard or the sturgeon with lemon, capers, potatoes and red pepper (Gold used to work with Michael Cimarusti at the Water Grill, and has a nice touch with seafood). The poached beef, a winner, is served medium rare and topped with salsa verde. À la carte sides might include risotto or creamed spinach with béchamel. Desserts, like the bread pudding with apples, raisins and caramel, have a relaxed, homemade feel. For a truly nostalgic treat, order the chocolate egg cream. The wine list is short and reasonable, and a higher-priced "reserve" section features mostly French offerings. Don't be fooled by the elegant look of the plates; Eva Restaurant is definitely an easy place to return to often. Drop by on a Sunday for an enjoyable family-style prix-fixe dinner, bargain-priced at $35 per person.
