Baracoa Cuban Cafe Description:
Baracoa is a tiny Atwater Village eatery with just ten tables, so expect to find yourself waiting for a seat if you come in during prime dining times. This endearing Cuban joint, a few doors down from Canalé, features cozy booths paired with candlelit rustic wooden tables beneath walls lined with murals of a Cuban seaside. The intimate restaurant offers respectable renditions of many Cuban staples, from a satisfying media noche (a classic sandwich of pressed ham, pork and cheese) to arroz con pollo, juicy roasted chicken marinated in garlic and mojo, ropa vieja and bistec empanizado, a Milanese-style pounded beef filet that we find suitably tender though the batter doesn't always stick to the meat. The black beans are among the best we've had in L.A. Order yucca and deep-fried empanadas, and wash them down with tropical-flavored batidos (fruit shakes) to complete a reasonably authentic taste of Havana on Glendale Boulevard.
