A Thousand Cranes Description:
The name relates to how the Japanese described Commodore Perry's first ships as they invaded the isolation of the Floating Kingdom. Overlooking a serene Japanese garden at Kyoto Grand Hotel & Gardens, this is a soothing and comfortable dining room attended to by gracious, kimono-clad servers. Despite its longevity, it continues to be a relatively undiscovered gem, and we hope the announced sale of the hotel does not affect this Little Tokyo favorite. Japanese businessmen settle in at the sushi bar, which is one of the best in downtown, but the real action is at the tables, with their garden view, or in the private tatami rooms. In addition to sushi, you'll find shabu-shabu specialties, topnotch beef, teriyaki dishes and a luxurious lobster tempura from the restaurant's highly regarded tempura bar. (True tempura bars are rare in L.A.) For a memorable experience, consider an artistically-presented, multi-course kaiseki (chef's choice) dinner. And for a refreshing change from the usual hotel Sunday brunch, come here for an impressive Japanese feast.
