Tamayo Restaurant Description:
Owned by an influential non-profit community organization---and a shining example of successful economic development in East L.A.---this handsome, rambling establishment is named after the masterly Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo. Located in a converted historic home, Tamayo's spacious dining room reflects the fine Spanish hacienda-style architecture of the late '20s. The menu is not particularly exciting, but the kitchen does a commendable job with fajitas, enchiladas and other favorites. Half a rotisserie chicken is bathed in mole poblano, baked jumbo shrimp are stuffed with ham and Monterey jack and bacon-wrapped, and rice pudding comes flavored with cinnamon and cloves. It is worth a trip for the old L.A. ambience alone.
